22 illustrations; fold /5(5). Étienne Provost ( – 3 July ) was a French Canadian fur trader whose trapping and trading activities in the American southwest preceded Mexican independence.
He was also known as Proveau and Provot (and the pronunciation was "Pra-vo"). Leading a company headquartered in Taos, in what is today New Mexico, he was active in the Green River drainage and the central portion of modern Utah.
Etienne Provost is one of a hand full of men who was an active participant in the Rocky Mountain fur trade from its inception to its demise. From until his death in Provost recruited new employees for the Pierre Chouteau, Jr. and Company and escorted them to the Missouri River posts each spring.
E tienne Provost was born in Chambly, Quebec, inbut his early life remains a mystery. For thirty-five years he made his home in St. Louis and was one of the more notable figures in the American fur trade.
He was among its earliest participants, traveling to the Arkansas River country as early as with Joseph Philibert, and again in with Auguste Chouteau and Jules deMun. Ah, the fickle finger of fate.
